[...] Oh, and in the never-ending pursuit to master the art of the tripodless qtvr, I took one yesterday in the middle of the pool at this pool party we went to on the side of Camelback Mountain. It was like the house they blew up in Lethal Weapon 2 and it was was every bit as ridiculous as it looks.
John,
wow, that kicks ass. so you don't even have to shoot them in order or even have them perfectly-aligned? it looks like it adjusts for tilt and can layer and can quilt them together on a vertical as well as horizontal axis... crazy.

i like the flash output of the one Steve recommended above but this is killer too. and free for personal looks like. nice.

A kinda similar program is AutoStich.
http://www.cs.ubc.ca/~mbrown/autostitch/autostitch.html
All you have to do is take a bunch of photos, drop them in a directory and the program will stitch them together for you. This program is great for creating those panoramic shots without having a special camera or lense.

Here's my review of ArcSoft Panorama Maker ($30) which publishes as QTVR or Flash. I like the Flash output better since its 1/10th the file size and resizable.

A full tutorial is available in O'Reilly's Digital Photography Hacks.
